Mina Gajic

Biography

Mina Gajić is internationally recognized for her insightful and dynamic performances, encompassing a vast and ever-evolving repertoire that includes new works by living composers, Romantic-era masterpieces performed on historic pianos, and collaborations on harpsichord and fortepiano. A native of Belgrade, she began her musical education and career in former Yugoslavia—now Serbia, later performing as a concerto soloist and recitalist in Italy, France, the Czech Republic, Serbia, Montenegro, China, Bolivia, and the United States. Her partnership with violinist Zachary Carrettin has brought her to four continents, showcasing a diverse repertoire on both historic and modern instruments, often featuring newly commissioned works.

Gajić’s discography on the acclaimed Sono Luminus label includes Boundless (Schubert violin/piano sonatas on period instruments), which appeared on Billboard Chart’s Top 10 Classical in 2020; Confluence (Balkan dances and Tango Nuevo); Sonic Alchemy (Mozart, Pärt, and Vasks); Boulder Bach Festival (featured as harpsichord concerto soloist); and Bach UnCaged, performing prepared piano works by John Cage.

Aequora (February 2025), features new music by Icelandic composers created for Gajić and Carrettin, as the duo Mystery Sonata. Her period-instrument interpretations of composers such as Brahms, Schumann, and Chopin have been widely praised, with performances featured in award-winning audiobooks like Escapement by Kristen Wolf.

Holding degrees from the Academy of Fine Arts in Belgrade, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and Rice University, Gajić earned her Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Colorado Boulder. She has garnered numerous accolades, including first prizes at competitions in Italy and Serbia, as well as a semi-finalist distinction at the Shanghai International Piano Competition. Her doctoral research explores the connection between Balkan folkloric traditions and the 20th-century music of Josip Slavenski.

Gajić records and performs on three meticulously restored historic pianos: an 1845 Érard, an 1870 Pleyel, and an 1895 Érard. As founder and Artistic Director of the Boulder International Chamber Music Competition Art of Duo, and founder of Boulder Bach Festival’s Fellowship Artist Initiative and Education Series, Gajić collaborated in the transformation of the non-profit’s brand and mission statement, continuing to oversee COmpass REsonance as its Artistic and Executive Director, championing innovative programming and historically inspired performance.
